Pick edX if you want the closest thing to a graduate-level CS course — HarvardX, MIT, and Berkeley flagship courses transfer to real Master's programs. Pick Coursera if you want a faster on-ramp from "I want to switch careers" to "I have a recognizable certificate to put on my resume."

Both platforms partner with universities, but their incentives differ. edX (now part of 2U) optimizes for learners who might enroll in a Master's program — its MicroMasters explicitly count toward degrees. Is edX or Coursera better for data science in 2026?

edX if you're aiming at grad school or want academic rigor (MITx MicroMasters, HarvardX flagship courses). Coursera if you're aiming at hiring (IBM, Google, Meta Professional Certificates) or want a faster path to a recognizable resume credential. Both are excellent — the choice is about your end goal.

Do edX MicroMasters actually transfer to a Master's degree?

Yes, with conditions. The MITx Statistics & Data Science MicroMasters can be applied to MIT's on-campus DEDP MS program if you're admitted.
